National Center for Primate Breeding and Research

Background

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) being the nodal national organization for conducting, coordinating and promoting medical research in India is establishing the National Centre for Primate Breeding and Research (NCPBR). The proposal was initiated by the National Institute for Research in Reproductive Health, (NIRRH) Mumbai which is one of the premier Institutes of ICMR. Since monkeys are closest to man both structurally and genetically they exhibit many of the biological and behavioral characters similar to humans and are often a vital link between basic research and clinical applications to human health problems and diseases. The proposed national centre is therefore aimed at creation of a unique national infrastructure facility for biomedical research matching international standards.
